Catholic Bishop Decries Religious Bigotry Against Mormons

SACRAMENTO 7 November 2008 (This news release was issued by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento) The following statement was released today by Bishop William Weigand, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento and former Bishop of Salt Lake City, in response to attacks on (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) for supporting California’s Proposition 8, defending the traditional definition of marriage:

“Catholics stand in solidarity with our Mormon brothers and sisters in support of traditional marriage — the union of one man and one woman — that has been the major building block of Western Civilization for millennia.

“The ProtectMarriage coalition, which led the successful campaign to pass Proposition 8, was an historic alliance of people from every faith and ethnicity. LDS were included — but so were Catholics and Jews, Evangelicals and Orthodox, African-Americans and Latinos, Asians and Anglos.

“Bigoted attacks on Mormons for the part they played in our coalition are shameful and ignore the reality that Mormon voters were only a small part of the groundswell that supported Proposition 8.

“As the former bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, I can attest to the fact that followers of the Mormon faith are a good and generous people with a long history of commitment to family and giving to community causes.

“I personally decry the bigotry recently exhibited towards the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — coming from the opponents of Proposition 8, who ironically, have called those of us supporting traditional marriage intolerant.

“I call upon the supporters of same-sex marriage to live by their own words — and to refrain from discrimination against religion and to exercise tolerance for those who differ from them. I call upon them to accept the will of the people of California in the passage of Proposition 8.”

SALT LAKE CITY 7 November 2008 The Church issued the following statement today:

It is disturbing that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is being singled out for speaking up as part of its democratic right in a free election.

Members of the Church in California and millions of others from every faith, ethnicity and political affiliation who voted for Proposition 8 exercised the most sacrosanct and individual rights in the United States — that of free expression and voting.

While those who disagree with our position on Proposition 8 have the right to make their feelings known, it is wrong to target the Church and its sacred places of worship for being part of the democratic process.

Once again, we call on those involved in the debate over same-sex marriage to act in a spirit of mutual respect and civility towards each other. No one on either side of the question should be vilified, harassed or subject to erroneous information.

The Treatment of Bush Has Been a Disgrace

Mr. Shapiro is an investigative reporter and lawyer who previously interned with John F. Kerry's legal team during the presidential election in 2004.

Earlier this year, 12,000 people in San Francisco signed a petition in support of a proposition on a local ballot to rename an Oceanside sewage plant after George W. Bush. The proposition is only one example of the classless disrespect many Americans have shown the president.

AP According to recent Gallup polls, the president's average approval rating is below 30% -- down from his 90% approval in the wake of 9/11. Mr. Bush has endured relentless attacks from the left while facing abandonment from the right.
This is the price Mr. Bush is paying for trying to work with both Democrats and Republicans. During his 2004 victory speech, the president reached out to voters who supported his opponent, John Kerry, and said, "Today, I want to speak to every person who voted for my opponent. To make this nation stronger and better, I will need your support, and I will work to earn it. I will do all I can do to deserve your trust."

Those bipartisan efforts have been met with crushing resistance from both political parties.

The president's original Supreme Court choice of Harriet Miers alarmed Republicans, while his final nomination of Samuel Alito angered Democrats. His solutions to reform the immigration system alienated traditional conservatives, while his refusal to retreat in Iraq has enraged liberals who have unrealistic expectations about the challenges we face there.

It seems that no matter what Mr. Bush does, he is blamed for everything. He remains despised by the left while continuously disappointing the right.

Yet it should seem obvious that many of our country's current problems either existed long before Mr. Bush ever came to office, or are beyond his control. Perhaps if Americans stopped being so divisive, and congressional leaders came together to work with the president on some of these problems, he would actually have had a fighting chance of solving them.

Like the president said in his 2004 victory speech, "We have one country, one Constitution and one future that binds us. And when we come together and work together, there is no limit to the greatness of America."

To be sure, Mr. Bush is not completely alone. His low approval ratings put him in the good company of former Democratic President Harry S. Truman, whose own approval rating sank to 22% shortly before he left office. Despite Mr. Truman's low numbers, a 2005 Wall Street Journal poll found that he was ranked the seventh most popular president in history.

Just as Americans have gained perspective on how challenging Truman's presidency was in the wake of World War II, our country will recognize the hardship President Bush faced these past eight years -- and how extraordinary it was that he accomplished what he did in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems. He never lost faith in America or her people, and has tried his hardest to continue leading our nation during a very difficult time.

Our failure to stand by the one person who continued to stand by us has not gone unnoticed by our enemies. It has shown to the world how disloyal we can be when our president needed loyalty -- a shameful display of arrogance and weakness that will haunt this nation long after Mr. Bush has left the White House.

One Matters for Impact!

I don't remember when it was exactly that I finally went past the sandbar. My family had a summer cottage on the shores of one of the Great Lakes. For the first forty or so feet, the lake is shallow, warm, and protected from big waves by the sandbar. That's where I spent most of the hot summer days as a boy. I liked it there. One day, my brother got me up on water skis. Perhaps fearing that a turn would make me fall, he drove the boat, and me, straight out into thedeep. By the way, this lake is over 100 miles wide. I screamed at him the whole terrifying ride. He took me about a half mile out. But ever after, the deep water was where I wanted to be: surfing in the breakers, water skiing, diving. I got out of the shallow water for good.

Over the years, I have watched a good number of people live out their lives in the shallows. In the shallows, life is all about yourself, your job, your money, your house, your rights, your needs, your opinions, your ideas, and your comfort.

In the deeper waters, life is about others: family, friends, faith, community, country, caring, commitment. In the deeper waters, there are challenging ideas, opposing opinions, and uncomfortable battles.

Almost every dimension of your life can be held to the shallows or taken into the deeper water. Your career, your involvement with others, your spouse and your children, your politics, each can be lived with you comfortably at the center. Or, they can draw you out of yourself, into service and sacrifice, into selflessness.

At some point in your life, a few of you may be presented with the opportunity to step off your career path, to give yourself fully to some kind of service. When I was asked to leave my investment company to run the Olympics in Salt Lake City, I dismissed the idea out of hand. I was making too much money, I didn't know bupkes about running a sports event. The job would pay me nothing. The organization was in the worst condition of any I had ever seen.

And, after the Games were over, the position would lead nowhere. It was a dead end.

I took it. It was the highlight of my professional life. I gave more of myself than I ever had before. I came to know and respect remarkable people. There are currencies more lasting than money. It can be enormously rewarding to take the unobvious course, to jump into the deep water. Bias is shallow thinking and shallow water.

Read widely, particularly from people who disagree with you. Argue to learn rather than to win. If you don't respect, I mean really respect, the views of people who disagree with you, then you don't understand them yet. There are smart people on both sides of almost every important issue. Learn from them all. If you have life all figured out in neat little packages, you're in Neverland, not the real world. And it's boring there.

There's one more thing I've seen in the people who swim in the deep waters of life. They don't fashion their values and principles to suit their self-interest; they live instead by enduring principles that are fundamental to society and to successful, great lives.

I learned important lessons about those principles from some of the Olympians I saw in Salt Lake City, like bobsledder Vonetta Flowers. Vonetta was brakeman on USA sled two. All the attention, however, was on sled one, the sled that had taken the World Cup and was a lock for the Olympic Gold. But just before the Olympics, the pilot of sled one dropped her partner and invited Vonetta Flowers to join her.

Vonetta had a tough decision. On sled one, she'd get a gold medal for sure; the first Olympic gold to be won by an African American in the Olympic Winter Games. Those of us rooting for US medals hoped she would jump to sled one. She didn't. She decided that friendship and loyalty to her longtime teammate on sled two was more important than winning the gold.

Of course, sled one did well. But when sled two beat them all, coming in first, the crowd went nuts. And tears dripped off Vonetta's cheeks. Friendship and loyalty above gold.

You live one time only. Don't spend it in safe, shallow water. Launch out into the deep. Give yourself to your family, to your career, to your community. Open your mind to diverging viewpoints. And live, not by what suits the moment, but by the principles that endure for a lifetime. Jump in, the water's fine!

Our family joined the Treehouse Athletic Club...yesterday was the first time I took the boys to the daycare center which is called, "The Nest." They loved it! We had a great time at the Utah State Fair! The boys loved people watching and enjoyed making animal sounds at the barn yard. The best part was the interactive exhibit by the Future Farmers of America! They loved pretending to be farmers! A spin on the carousel and a ride on the ponies was a hit with Gage but not with Gavin. They also enjoyed tasting a fried PB&J and fried oreos...delicious!

WHITMAN GETS CHANCE TO SHINE

When Meg Whitman takes the stage tonight at the Republican National Convention, it will mark a whirlwind journey from leading eBay to joining the inner circle of presidential politics.

She joined John McCain's campaign in spring and quickly became a key adviser to the GOP presidential candidate, who recently called her one of the three wisest people he knows. She found her name moving up lists of possible vice-presidential candidates. And she even made Jay Leno's monologue. The comedian deadpanned last week that Whitman would be a good vice-presidential pick: "You know, she's an expert at selling Americans really old stuff."

Her 10-minute speech during prime time tonight is her biggest opportunity yet to make the leap from chief executive to a political force — and if successful, it could boost her own possible run for office.

But in an interview Tuesday, Whitman said her task is sticking to tonight's convention theme, "Prosperity,'' as she lays out McCain's economic plan to cut government spending and lower taxes.

"I'll be speaking about what the first 100 days of a McCain administration will look like and his economic plan for middle-class Americans, who are struggling,'' she said. She also will describe McCain's plan to wean the nation off a dependency on foreign oil, a task that she described as "our generation's moon shot.''

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina also will speak tonight on the economy. Fiorina, too, is considering a possible run for elected office. While Fiorina has taken a higher-profile role wooing disaffected Hillary Clinton voters and defending McCain, Whitman has remained more in the background, fundraising and working on economic policy. Last year, she was a major fundraiser for then-Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

On Tuesday, Whitman would not describe her own political aspirations, but she has expressed interest in running for governor in 2010 and has hired the firm run by Steve Schmidt, former adviser to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who now runs the day-to-day operations of the McCain campaign.

Both Fiorina and Whitman were on a list of 20 possible candidates for vice president. Whitman on Tuesday would not say how seriously she was considered. "I have just kept this very close to the vest,'' she said, adding "it was a privilege to be considered.'' Some suggested it would have been hard for McCain to pick either Fiorina or Whitman, whose wealth is estimated by Forbes magazine to be $1.3 billion, because Americans would not identify with them.

In the wake of McCain's decision to choose Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, political pundits have wondered aloud why McCain didn't go with an experienced female politician or at least a female business leader who could shore up his economic credentials.

While Fiorina on Tuesday went on the attack, accusing Barack Obama's campaign for what she described as a belittling of Palin's experience, Whitman would not discuss whether Palin is getting fair treatment.

"John McCain made the choice that's right for him,'' Whitman said Tuesday.

She added, "I feel strongly that I have confidence in John's decision and I think it will work itself out and I know he thought about it long and hard.''

She stresses that her job is to sell McCain's economic prescriptions. But her eBay persona is a great icebreaker. She's made speeches to several state delegations while in Minnesota and has been stopped by many eBay users.

"They recognize me, and come up and say 'I'm an eBay seller,' or tell me 'I bought my car on eBay,'"‰'' she laughed.

The mild-mannered Whitman was one of the unlikeliest Silicon Valley billionaires. She had to be convinced to move from Boston, where she marketed Teletubbies for Hasbro, to join a small start-up with a funny name, eBay, in 1998. But she built the company into a household name. But by the time she left in March, competition from Google and Amazon.com had left analysts wondering what is next for the company.

What's next for Whitman depends largely on how McCain fares. Both Fiorina and Whitman have been mentioned as possible Cabinet- level secretaries. But those who know Whitman believe she is more interested in running for governor.

Despite her success at eBay, the transition to politics can be rough, warned Ken Khachigian, a veteran California Republican strategist.

"Business people think, 'I survived the board of directors, I survived the tough deals.' But it's nothing like what they have to face when they run for statewide office It's not just a lot of scrutiny. It's just going to be tough,'' he said.

I was changing Gage and when I went to find Gavin he was hiding behind a plant...and what was he doing? Eating CHEETOS!!! When I approached him he said, "Good, Good Momma." Could I really take the bag away at that point? And later when I walked in and Gage had the bag, he took off running when he saw me. Oh boy! Yes, I am a member of the Britney Spears Mothering Club.

The Kid Barn

For Labor Day we took the boys to a local bounce place called "The Kid Barn" and they had a great time! There were 7 huge play structure but my two were more interested in the cords, the fans, the back wall, etc.

Congratulations to my dear friend Leslie and her husband Bryan! They will soon have twin boys and their lives will never be the same (or clean, calm,) again. It was a great shower and so fun to catch up with old friends from the Mt. Olympus Singles Ward. It was also wonderful to find out that Margaret will soon have a baby girl in her home!

Another fun night of Bunko with the girls from Suncrest. Tonight Mandi served the most amazing dinner. Everyone was so stuffed with good food that there was no clear winner...so they had to "Bunk-Off." I was so distracted by the hilarious conversation at my table that I won the prize for lowest Bunkos...I had zero!

What a fun night celebrating Camille and Baby Madden! Lindsay made a crazy delicious meal and dessert. I don't know how she does it with three little ones too! It was fun to line the moms up on the couch with their new boys! Little girls of the world are so lucky to have these baby boys in it!

Today was our first day home in three weeks...while unpacking I looked out my dining room window and saw huge clouds of smoke. It was a crazy big fire...we were lucky and the wind blew it away from Suncrest. No homes were destroyed which was a huge blessing!

Against a backdrop of stars and mountains the play will portray the fulfillment of the signs of the birth and death of Jesus Christ. Come join us for an inspiring remembrance of the climactic story of the Book of Mormon; the appearance of the resurrected Savior among the people of the New World. Visits from Corinne

Since the babies have been newborns, Corinne has tried to come weekly to visit me. Her company really did save me during those cold months I was home bound and the babies were tiny & scary. I've enjoyed our visits over the past 20 months or so. Pickle doesn't enjoy the twins as much these days. The babies weren't mobile and Pickle had the run of the place...now when he comes he is followed and hounded by two beastie little boys. Corinne will have her baby girl next week...and I assume our visits will be on hold for awhile. And when we are back together we will be totally out numbered...four to two!
